Since 2022 is coming to an end, we thought it would be fun to look back at some of what we got up to this year across our three locations in Canada. Looking back at accomplishments, SGH socials and industry events that took place over the course of the year. It’s hard to believe at the beginning of 2022 we were still working entirely remote, and now back in the office with a hybrid model.

Let’s take a look back.

January

DesignTO

In January, SGH was working remotely, staying connected via our teams calls and weekly meetings. The DesignTO Festival took place with “distanced and digital” programming that showcased 91 different events, exhibitions, and installations. This online and in person event is an annual Design Festival that celebrates design every January.

February

Biggest Interior Design Firms Metro Vancouver
In February SGH Design Partners was listed on the Biggest Interior Design firms in Metro Vancouver for 2022! A great success for SGH! You can see the full list here

Painting Class
In March of this year SGH’s virtual social was an online paint class. A fun opportunity to get creative and unleash your inner artist while enjoying and connecting with coworkers across all three of our studios. There was be a professional artist who guided us through completing our own version of a featured image, step by-step. Hosted by Fresh Paint Studio, a Toronto-based art studio that connects the community through art and encourages individuals to create art fearlessly.

Eva’s 2022 Golf Classic
SGH was happy to be a part of Eva’s 2022 Golf Classic! Monika and Erin from SGH Toronto joined Judith from Raymond James and Tina from RBC for an incredible day of golf supporting Eva’s Initiatives. The event raised more than $11,000 onsite and in total, helped Eva’s raise $241,000 to provide youth with a safe place to sleep, nutritious food, access to medical and mental health supports, employment and life skills, recreational activities, and housing support. Congratulations to everyone involved!

Heritage + Steelcase WorkBetter Lab
Our Vancouver office checked out the Heritage + Steelcase Work Better Lab Pop-Up, and attended the IDIBC Shine Award and the Interior Design Show West Trade Show! All the events were an incredible time, and so nice to connect with so many in the industry!

October

Tarot Card Readings
For SGH’s October social our Office Manager brought in a Tarot Card reader for our team in Toronto. Every few months we try to get together as a team and do an activity to connect us all outside of work. It was a great evening spent with the team and a fun idea for the spooky season!

Our Director of Workplace Strategy, Susan Jefferson presented at The Building Show. Speaking on Workplaces: Design to Succeed! It was an incredible success, and she is looking forward to her next speaking event at IDS in January!

Grand Opening
SGH attended the grand opening for the Toronto Board of Trade. We are proud to have been a part of such an incredible team who came together to make this project one to remember! The event was such an incredible evening and a huge success!

Remmy Awards
SGH’s project with Spotify was nominated for a Remmy Award! This extremely successful project was such a joy to develop. Our team is incredibly proud to have been a part of such an incredible event!

December

Holiday Season
And finally, December, the final month of this year. In December each office had their annual holiday dinner/party to celebrate this incredible time of year and successes over the course of 2022. Truly amazing looking back at all the fun, we got up to over the course of 2022. These are just a few of the highlights that took place this year, there are too many to include in one post.

Wishing you all a healthy, happy and safe holiday season. We are looking forward to seeing what 2023 has to come!

What We Love in Toronto

Winter Village at the Distillery District

A classic holiday tradition in the city! We love to go and shop the holiday market, enjoy hot cider, food and beverages while taking in the holiday lights! This has become a staple holiday outing for many all-around Toronto.

Skating at the Nathan Phillips Square

What is more classic Canadian winter then putting on a pair of skates and skating at city hall? You can rent skates or bring your own and skate surrounded by the vibrant city life and can even pop into the Eaton Center next door for some holiday shopping after.

Seeing the Bay holiday display at the Eaton Center

Every year the Bay on Queen Street unveils their holiday window display. It is a site to be seen and this year they have even added a digital aspect. Around for over 100 years, the holiday window display has become a part of the Toronto holiday season.

When a business is considering renovating their office, there is typically a series of contributing factors as to why they are looking for change. These factors can come from a variety of places. Their current space may be dark and closed off and they are seeking a more bright and vibrant space with more access to natural light. Maybe there is a lack of collaborative or hybrid workspaces within their office, and they need more space for their team to work together, or maybe the opposite, the client requires more quiet spaces for their staff to have meetings and have heads down focus workspaces.

Our goal as designers is to problem solve with our clients to ensure your objectives are met. We are a part of your process of growth and shifting to new ways of working or updating old ways of working to help guide and generate what the future holds for your new space. This process includes working alongside our clients, helping to develop spaces that promote employee satisfaction, efficient work settings, comfortable space for staff, and creating a unique look or feel catered to your individual culture and people. Throughout this blog we will look at 2 examples of previous client’s office spaces, pre and post design, and discuss how their goals were met.

Munich Re

SGH Design Partners was retained to design a fresh solution for the 36,000 square foot office at the Munich Re, Toronto Office. Philipp Wassenberg, the former Chairman of Munich Re sat down with SGH to discuss the renovation process, objectives, and success of the project. During our interview, Philipp discussed how the old space was closed off by cubicles and filling cabinets. It was a space that focused on individual privacy over everything else. To ensure a seamless process, carefully selected ambassadors from each team were a part of in-depth visioning sessions throughout the project. This unique connection between client and our Design Team provided for clear understanding of each team’s objectives and needs.

Philipp had a goal of an open concept space that would incorporate a “living room feeling” while keeping a modern design. Access to natural sun light was an important feature, which paired well with the light color selection and lots of Scandinavian design influence. The offices that required privacy had floor to ceiling glass walls which kept the private spaces connected with the rest of the team.

Workstations were selected to cater to flexibility, with an open concept, yet had enough structure that allowed employees to pin up pictures or place personal items on their desk to make them feel more at home. A true transformation from closed office to a welcoming and dynamic space that set the standard for future work with the firm.

When asked about what the space has achieved, Philipp stated that their new space has achieved a far higher level of collaboration, transparency, with people moving around throughout the space and interacting with one another. The space is flexible, which has led to staff becoming more innovative and creative, having a lot more fun in the space than previously. Employees are encouraged to explore the three floors. Unique spaces on each floor include: 21st floor, a multi-purpose training space; 22nd floor, boardroom complex; and 23rd floor, Games/Social lounge. All spaces were designed with the ambassador’s input and inspiration.

By aligning the workplace more closely to the Global brand we achieved strategic objectives for innovation and talent attraction. Previously, the office was set up as individual workspaces and segregated departments which forced people to work independently. The new space encourages sharing of knowledge and information between teams. Work areas visually connect employees and are well balanced with a variety of collaboration and social zones.

Wildeboer Dellelce LLP

Wildeboer Dellelce LLP is one of Canada’s leading standalone corporate finance law firms. This 23,000 square foot office space over three full floors underwent extensive renovations that modernized the office into a playful yet sophisticated space.

SGH started off working as a consultant for Wildeboer Dellelce LLP, helping decide which real estate would best suit their needs. Working as a trusted advisor for the Client during the real estate review process is how it was determined that the decision would be made to stay in their current office space and renovate.

The full three floors overwent extensive renovations that modernized the office into a playful yet sophisticated space. The 8th floor is client-facing, dedicated to meetings and events, and designed to make a lasting impression. When arriving on the reception floor, guests are greeted by a bright open space filled with light and texture that has been created by the sharp angles of the reception desk which contrast the soft colour palette.

Dark finishes and little collaborative space that represents a typical law firm was transformed into a modern layout with a colourful palette. Designed for efficiency, each of the three floors serve multiple purposes while creating seamless traffic flow and connections between lawyers and clients. A variety of furniture solutions were planned for each floor to encourage employees to move to different working environments throughout their day.

A bright, functionally efficient office that would resonate with their client base and employees while maintaining a strong design identity was imminent. The new design would meet all functional requirements and maintain a ‘wow factor’ all while staying on budget. This space needed to support a seamless connection between lawyers and clients across the three floors of their space. This law office is transformed into a bright open space filled with light and texture consistent with a radiant and transparent look and feel.

After completing the project SGH interviewed Kevin Dane, COO from Wildeboer, to discuss his opinion on the renovation. Kevin Dane, COO from Wildeboer, spoke about the importance of a well-designed office space, through the benefits he saw at his new space. Kevin stated the new office space is more efficient, collaborative, lively, and employee friendly.

At SGH we believe the office is more than a box we assimilate to complete a day’s work, it is somewhere that ideas are created, people interact, business is conducted, and where we live for many hours a week. Quite often clients will come to SGH, knowing they want to renovate their space, but don’t know where to start, our job as designers is to understand how your business works, the in’s and out’s and help solution and guide our clients to determine what strategy we can take to reach your goals. We do not take a one size fits all approach but customize the design process to align with your individual needs and desires for your new space.

The workplace landscape continues to evolve and emerging concepts like “employee experiences” and “destination offices” are reflective of a keen desire to get people physically together, to be able to collaborate, share, mentor and connect with one another face to face. There is value and an innate understanding that people working together in a shared space are more likely to build relationships that foster innovative collaboration.

How this translates into physical space is highly interpretive and with the cost of construction, technology infrastructure and the importance of climate initiatives, getting it right is critical. SGH continues to rely on our strategic research processes to ensure we gain a deep understanding of workplace culture and goals to lay the groundwork for implementing these evolving concepts.

The office should support four main human needs: focus, collaboration, connection, and community. First, the tone of these spaces should be established. Will the space be formal? Casual? Will it have a purpose for being a head’s down, driven space or one that offers more flexibility? These are all questions that will help to determine the driving factors of how to design a workplace that is worth going to.

At SGH it is our role as specialists in design is to deeply understand how recent changes have impacted our approach to designing office spaces. Reflecting on 2.5 years of pandemic learnings, we have heard that working from home or a “third place” is a desirable option.

Through our research and interviews with teams during lockdown periods, we heard loud and clear that many people prefer working from their own personal space. Many have been, and continue to work 50% or more on focused, heads down activities that generally require smaller interactions with one to two colleagues. On the other hand, many people felt isolated at home and have returned to their office space. These people claimed they missed working with colleagues, the social interactions, some did not have a proper working space at home, they were experiencing digital fatigue and found face to face allows for much faster spontaneous interactive meetings.

Prior to March 2020, approximately 87% of employees came into an office 5 days a week between the hours of 9 am to 5 pm with an assigned seat. Since that time up to 50% of companies are now ready to shift to a more flexible workspace but to varying degrees. SGH has created a work style spectrum that strategically gauges where companies are comfortable shifting towards. On one end is 100% assigned seating, and on the other end 100% agile, with no assigned seating and flexible work settings. Within this spectrum are the opportunities to provide ideal collaboration and focus areas that support people in productive work activities.

As flexibility and working in alternative locations continue to be a trend in the workplace, we have looked to other disciplines to draw inspiration from, like hospitality. Offices that provide welcoming visitor spaces adjacent to meeting areas and a collaboration cafe allow them to see others, connect easily and navigate comfortably through the space. This same energy can translate to full-time employees who will only work from this one location. What kind of shared spaces are you able to provide to bring something to each person’s day? The competition to get people to the office continues to rise as co-working offices evolve, off-site travel locations increase, and organizations vie for the best talent.

What we know through decades of research, is that human beings thrive on social connections and are happiest when they belong to a community. Running alongside this is an acknowledgment that we are diverse and that what may create a community for one person may not meet the needs of another. Remote work has given many people an opportunity to create their own spaces, carve out new rituals, and tailor their environment to allow them to be most productive.

To be destination worthy, the workplace must be a physical location that creates opportunities to build community through a variety of experiences that adapt and learn from the people using it. Spaces will be intelligent, fluid, and adaptive to support the needs of collaborative and heads-down work. Today, knowledge workers have more choices and can connect remotely anywhere part-time or full-time, depending on the work style of the organization. How this will work for your office will vary depending on several factors.

This shift has brought organizational leaders, industry experts, and designers together to reimagine the role of the office. A destination is generally considered a place that people will make a special trip to visit. It has a purpose and is a place that is worth the trip. Having a dedicated address that inspires people connects them with others, and gives them a space to get on with their work can give staff a sense of structure and routine.

Workplaces will continue to be the important central place your community will gather, connect, produce, and create. Whatever it is, the time and effort to plan your journey to creating a destination office will be worth the research and effort.

SGH has proudly worked with several local artists to create unique, and creative murals and centerpieces for the companies we work with. Art can create a major impact in the workplace. It is a great way to express the company’s values, promote a creative environment, and many believe art in the workplace can boost employees’ productivity levels.

SGH has worked with many local artists with the goal of creating something unforgettable, that incorporates and expresses your company’s culture, values, and history.

Toronto Board of Trade, Toronto, ON

SGH worked with the Toronto Regional Board of Trade and local artist, David Rotsztain, to create a large mural of the city. The mural spans from the far left to right and illustrates Toronto’s past, present, and future.

The mural starts on the left showcasing old Toronto, it slowly builds to the right incorporating buildings like the CN Tower and the Rogers center, and as you approach the right side of the piece futuristic inspired towers, new forms of transit, and even a delivery drone are showcased.

This mural shows the history of this beautiful city and the goals to work towards.

FINANCIAL CLIENT, NANAIMO, BC

This financial client based in Nanaimo, British Columbia needed a space that would accommodate two different departments. One side of the space would be for the call center, the other would host as a quiet but still open workspace for the finance and accounting department.

The two user groups are buffered from each other through the creation of “collaboration avenues” which are defined by a change in flooring and a dropped wood slat ceiling feature to create refuge and visual breaks in between the open spaces. Fresh accent colors of spring green and ocean blues infuse a calming atmosphere in this open, bright, and modern space.

Large walls throughout the workstations and lunch area/café provide the introduction of art selected specifically to represent Nanaimo, British Columbia, and the rich indigenous community that the offices are located within.

We all recognize the name McCain Foods, but what are some things that come to mind when we say their name? Potatoes are one of them. SGH worked with McCain to create a workspace that would support and promote their corporate values and culture.

At the heart of the McCains, Toronto office is an open concept interconnected stair. To utilize this space an artistic centerpiece representing their roots, company culture, and history was designed. The centerpiece is a long spiraling structure meant to represent a piece of peeled potato skin. The inner layer of the structure is layered with images about the company’s history, the original owners, employees, and brand. It represents those who built the company into what it is today and is a unique piece just for McCain.

SGH Design Partners was retained by Ipsos in 2019, as a consulting role. During the early stages, SGH helped Ipsos contemplate relocating to a new office space or staying and renovating their current location to better suit their desire for a more collaborative work environment.
Inspiration can come in many forms and continuing to be inspired in new ways ensures the spaces we create for clients are unique and on the leading edge of design. As you can see above, Ipsos included a large-scale “leaf” installation designed by Cynthia Colby over their interconnecting stair with the goal of unifying the two floors and providing subtle references to their brand origin.

SGH designed a new space that encourages collaboration. Renovating the reception area, a cafe has been incorporated to foster connection among the teams. The office transitioned from a closed perimeter office space to a benching system. Their new space is a state-of-the-art workplace that met their budget and exceeded their expectations.

It is important for our studio to ensure that we are seeking inspiration not just from what has been done, but from abstract sources that drive design innovation.

This year, December 1st, 2021, marks SGH’s 35th year in business!

We are so proud to continue providing exceptional quality design services for our clients and how far we have come over the years as a team. SGH has grown tremendously since we started 35 years ago; to celebrate, we are looking back at some of SGH’s milestones and transitional events that took place over the years.

We are honored to have spent the past 35 years building a community of wonderful clients and friends and we are looking forward to a bright future ahead.

1987: SGB was Founded

After working together for many years, Carol Smith, Peter Grimley, David Berg and Don Harris came together and became the founding Partners of what was at the time called Smith Grimley Berg, a corporate interior design firm in downtown Toronto. The original office, located at 411 Richmond Street, was home to the original SGB team who worked on SGB’s first big clients like Canada Life, the Sky Dome (now known as The Rogers Center in Toronto) and William Mercer.

These were the days where contracts were typed out on typewriters and everything was completely hand drawn. Shortly thereafter, SGB decided to invest in a software called AutoCAD which revolutionized the way designers could work. A huge learning curve, from all hand drawn to using computers and technology, edits could be made in minutes not hours, this new software transformed design as we knew it.

1996: Monika Joined SGB

In 1996 a new team member joined the SGB team, her name was Monika Sarkisian. She was an intermediate designer who had graduated from Ontario College of Art and Design a few years prior. Monika, a highly creative team member, joined SGB ambitious and excited for what the firm had to offer.

2000: SGB became SGH

After much deliberation, it was clear it was time for a rebrand of SGB, after a few years in business, SGB had solidified its place in the design community and was confident in who they were as a brand. It was time for a shift and Smith Grimley Harris Design Partners was born. Moving from a silent partner, Don Harris became an acting Partner with the retirement of David Berg. This new name came with a new fresh logo and new branding for SGH.

After much deliberation, it was clear it was time for a rebrand at SGB. After a few years in business, SGB had solidified its place in the design community and was confident in who they were as a brand.

2001: The September 11 Attacks

The 9/11 attacks changed the lives of many forever. This devastating tragedy triggered a change in many sectors, including a large impact for the design and architectural community. There was a need to increase security measures to be integrated into buildings, new building code regulations were set in place and a focus on careful selection of building materials were implemented. A greater focus on technology came into play, which increased audio visual and communications technology.

2005: SGH moves to 366 Adelaide

After nearly 10 years at 411 Richmond, SGH had outgrown the space and needed a larger footprint to call home. Through careful consideration, SGH made the move down the road to 366 Adelaide Street West. This larger space allowed for SGH to continue to grow and expand as the years went on and is where we are still located today.

2008: Financial Crisis

In 2008 the Financial Crisis of (2007-2009) also known as the Global Financial Crisis commenced and was the worst recession seen since the great depression. Millions lost their jobs, lost their homes, and businesses went bankrupt. It was a challenging time for many, and SGH Design Partners worked to continue to stay strong through this time by helping clients to reduce their space and supporting those who required real estate densification.

2009: Monika became Partner at SGH

After working with SGH Design Partners for 13 years, Monika Sarkisian became an official Partner at SGH in 2009! During these 13 years, design had shifted quite a bit, a new focus on health and wellness had come into play. LEED and WELL AP certifications become to increase in popularity and workplaces were shifting to a more open and collaborative workplace.

Perimeter offices were being moved internally so more staff had access to natural light, office plans were implementing more shared and communal spaces like lounges and cafes for the staff to enjoy, and office culture and branding became important key features in the design of new spaces.

2013: John Joined SGH as Partner

John Tanfield started his career in 1992 with an architectural technologist diploma and continued his education by completing his Master’s in Architecture. Before SGH, John worked with Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) as a Senior Vice President of Project Development Services and is now proudly one of SGH’s two partners.

2014: SGH Opened the Halifax Office

As SGH continued to grow the Partners felt it was time to expand our national presence and opened a new office in Halifax, Nova Scotia. After building connections and working with teams from across the country, the timing felt right to make this leap and enter a new market.

SGH has now been working in Atlantic Canada for the last seven (7) years, and we have grown our Atlantic studio tremendously. We have worked on a multitude of projects ranging from 2,000 sq. ft. to 100,000 sq. ft. and provide a full scope of services to our east coast clients.

2015: SGH Opened the Vancouver Office

With the success of our Atlantic office in the first year of business, SGH continued our expansion to the West Coast of Canada opening our office in Vancouver, British Columbia. We continue to service our clients nationally and our new design studio showcases our well-versed and collaborative team.

2016: SGH Rebrands

After a few small rebrands throughout the years, it was time for a new face of SGH. With the new Partners, Monika Sarkisian and John Tanfield, it was time to put their stamp on the SGH brand. The rebrand started with the design of a new logo. We outsourced incredible graphic designers to come up with a new logo and after a few months of deliberation the new logo as you see it today was born.

This new logo, inspired by the light reflection and shadows, became the kick start of a complete rebrand of SGH Design Partners. New standards, a social media presence and workplace culture emerged. This rebrand triggered the redesign of the SGH website, which was completed in 2019.

2019: Two New Director of Operations and SGH Gets a New Website

Krysia Gorgolewska became the Director of Operations for our Halifax office in 2019. After working at our Toronto office for many years and doing incredible world travels between 2018-2019, Krysia moved to Halifax and became our Director of Operations for our East Coast Office

Alexis Mrowietz became our Director of Operations for our Vancouver office also in 2019. Alexis had worked with SGH for a few years before transitioning into Director of Operations for Vancouver. Alexis is an incredibly talented designer who loves the West Coast and is the perfect fit to lead our Vancouver Team.

2020: COVID-19

As we all know, in 2020 everything seemed to stop when COVID-19 took the world by storm and forced us all to slow down. While a lot of us transitioned to working from home, essential workers stood at the forefront, carrying the weight of this very unprecedented time. This impacted design dramatically. Design went very quickly from collaborative workspaces and open floorplans to implementing 6 ft distancing, screen dividers, and protectors between workers. Construction came to a halt and all projects were temporarily put on hold. After months of planning our approach and strategy it was clear to SGH that we believed the future includes people. We would continue to build spaces that promote human connection, even during a time where the world went virtual, it was evident that human connection would be a key factor in coming out of this pandemic.

2021: SGH Turns 35

35 years in business!

Through many ups and downs around the world, SGH Design Partners is honoured and proud to hold its place in the interior design industry, where we continue to build connections with an incredible community. So much has changed over the last 35 years, yet many things have stayed the same at the core. We are still incredibly grateful for our team of uniquely talented individuals. We appreciate the countless connections we have made over the years, and we are humbled by just how far we have come.

When looking back at this timeline, it is just incredible to reflect on some of SGH’s milestones over the years. Today, SGH Design Partners is employing our highest number of staff to date. We have completed projects with clients across Canada and internationally and we continue to grow and develop new skills as the times change. We are incredibly thankful for the past 35 years in business and are looking forward to what the future holds.

We create environments where people do their best work

This renovation in place for this existing downtown Nanaimo location, swiftly transitioned into a tedious relocation project. After establishing all design criteria for the renovation in place and starting the process of working through permit items an unexpected base building restriction resulted in the decision to shift gears and relocate.

After extensive evaluation with the Client considering various locations it was determined this Financial Client would move to a rural/suburban environment in the Nanaimo North Town Center Mall. This existing shopping mall is in the process of “de-malling” to revitalize and bring together both commercial and retail space in a hybrid environment. This client selected two of the new commercial retail units (CRU) being constructed in a setting surrounded by water, forest and beautiful natural landscapes. The sacrifice, a less accessible space to the variety of social amenities offered by their existing downtown location.

The space needed to accommodate two very different user groups. The first being a louder and more energized call centre, the second a quieter, heads down, focused finance and accounting group. Both needed lots of collaborative space with a variety of closed and open options, easily accessible and flexible.

The two user groups are buffered from each other through the creation of “collaboration avenues” which are defined by a change in flooring and a dropped wood slat ceiling feature to create refuge and visual breaks in between the open spaces. Fresh accent colours of spring green and ocean blues infuse a calming atmosphere in this open, bright and modern space. Adding three new skylights and coordinating carefully with mechanical requirements bring in additional natural light and air that fills the whole space. Large walls provide the introduction of art and graphics selected specifically to represent Nanaimo, BC.

The overall floor layout is free-flowing and organic with centralized collaboration avenues which house focus and meeting spaces. Amenities include phone booths, perch points, pause areas, training and coaching rooms set up for privacy, focus or spontaneous interactions depending on the need. These inviting spaces are open, engaging and transparent allowing light to filter through panes of glass. The curved and soft edges of the 140 workstations create an approachable friendliness that contrasts nicely against the rectangular rigid architecture allowing for a variety of ways to circulate through the space. This casual approach encourages people to interact and socialize through spontaneous happy encounters that aspire to make the workday a welcoming experience which, in the long run, helps to attract and retain great talent.

What made this space location really sing is the introduction of the employee café. It is a bright and inviting destination spot where people can gather, dine, meet and socialize. This makes up for the lack of access to eating areas close by and fosters a real community feeling. Beautiful artwork created by local artists celebrate this unique and rich indigenous community. Implementing graphics and common meeting areas such as the employee café were critical for this project’s success. Soft furniture settings and booth like seating provide a variety of uses that entice people to drop in throughout the day yet lightweight enough to allow flexibility in accommodating large town hall gatherings. Skylights were integrated to help with access to natural light, this kept the windows open and did not block light that was able to engulf the space throughout.

Through active listening the designer was able to really understand the workplace strategy, goals and significant changes required for this future office to be highly successful now and into the future. The proportion of flexible work areas to shared meeting and focused areas was clearly defined as part of the discovery process early on. In the end the open, expansive industrial space achieved this most successfully as was vetted out in the search for the right location.

The open organic workspaces are agile, flexible and spacious. Flanked by focus rooms, meeting areas, and closed areas there is a break from loud space to quiet refuge space. The approach to colours and texture are soft, natural and timeless utilizing the clean modern lines of the building space. Furniture has rounded edges and breaks from the tradition grid pattern that allow the space to have a spontaneous energy. High, large walls proudly display local artwork that define spaces, provides orientation and infuse local humour and culture.

Client Statement

The new offices were a huge success and well received by our staff. SGH Design Partner approach to programming, data-gathering and workplace strategies allowed the SGH team to understand our goals and objectives for both short and long term.

SGH did an excellent job at integrating our standards for workplace while utilizing their creative skills to integrate a workplace that reflected the local Nanaimo culture, look and feel. The results were realized immediately. Design elements such as access to natural light for all staff, open and generous circulation space, multiple collaboration spaces, etc., have all contributed to the new design of our work environment to help improve staff morale and staff retention.

A giant leap revolutionizing a private office into an open work environment for a family-oriented packaged materials company. This change was to harbor a much-needed interaction and accessibility among the directors and employees. Creative pockets and impromptu meeting areas were implemented to support this connection.

The 15,000 SF flex building was compiled of cold concrete, stark white walls and 16-foot open ceilings. Through harmonious design and architecture, this space was transformed into an inviting workplace, reflecting their core values through a residential esthetic.

Conducting workshops, visioning and data gathering sessions were an integral part of the design evolution that gave insight to develop what the key design drivers would be, accessibility and collaboration. It was crucial that all of the partners involved in this project were on the same page and ensured flawless communication throughout. This allowed for the final creation of the holistic office space that was desired.

Keeping the perimeter clear provided an unobstructed view of the surrounding nature and allowed natural daylight to engulf the space, which prompted the design to mature into this bright open concept space. Low-profile furniture was selected to ensure visibility and sightlines were kept throughout the space, eliminating hierarchies within the office and allowed for this approachable and accessible office.

Working with a blank slate, and having a flex building, gave an endless amount of opportunity to create more than just your typical office space. This design build project was an interconnected team of moving parts. The overall solution required a problem-solving process, and a holistic design approach. Starting from the pouring of the concrete floor up, meant the design approach needed to be innovative. Implementing careful strategies were required in order to stay within the client’s budget while designing an environment that employees would look forward to working in. The Client’s authentic family connection inspired the team-based approach to the design solution. This in turn was led by the Client’s core values: integrity, respect, excellence, courage, openness and honesty.

The offices and meeting rooms were designed with glass walls to maintain an open feel throughout the entirety of the office. Having them centrally located with workstations, pause areas, and collaborative pockets would allow the remaining area to remain exposed to the building’s natural surroundings, filling the space with daylight. This layout enables the staff members to communicate effortlessly and collaborate seamlessly.

A harmonious blend between raw elements of earth, minerals and sediment, this concrete company paired more refined details to represent their welcoming culture. Electric Blue paint, inspired by their corporate colours, was incorporated into various accents throughout the office: from the large blue wall in the reception to the blue baffles suspended from the ceiling, every element in this space represents the Clients brand. This large-scale building covered in glazing was brought to life with white details, custom concrete countertops and warm toned woods to create a unified space.

Using a holistic approach, early partnership with furniture vendor, SGH gained a greater understanding of the team’s daily functions. Forward focused solutions were designed to support their specific needs.

Carefully selected ambassadors from each team were a part of in-depth visioning sessions throughout the project. This unique connection betweenClient and Design Team provided for clear understanding of each team’s objectives and needs.

Employees are encouraged to explore the three floors. Unique spaces on each floor include:21st floor, a multi-purpose training space; 22nd floor, boardroom complex; and 23rd floor, Games/Social lounge. All spaces were designed with the ambassadors input and inspiration.

This dynamic downtown Toronto location is the central and main client focused location for Canada. The project had an aggressive timeline to design and build a creative, highly collaborative, brand focused solution to support the clients marketing strategy globally. Being that the direct contacts and decision makers were not physically seated in Toronto (mostly in the US or Beijing) presented a logistics challenge. SGH devised a strong and detailed management approach on deliverables and a communications methodology was developed.

As Prime Consultant SGH brought together an experienced team including construction manager and engineering consultants. SGH became a trusted advisor leading local teams on behalf of the client to deliver a creative, dynamic and fluent environment. The early engagement of a cohesive team was essential in navigating risk, response time, accuracy, managing cost and creating a creative and energized design solution that reflects leading edge innovation and their global reach but was also easily replicated nationally.

The client came from a mixed workplace setting (open/closed/traditional). Adaptability to an open office concept was key. Showcasing examples, helping with change before and after moving to support staff and understanding how to work and behave in this new work style became a natural ingredient in our design process.

The client’s direction was to leverage off the global brand direction based out of their Beijing, China office. SGH adapted the gradient palette of bright purples, pinks and fuchsias within a Canadian sensibility introducing the warmth of wood detailing and luxury vinyl wood look flooring to soften and delineate space. The use of colour and texture creates both linear and horizontal volume as well as break up areas by function including collaboration and community spaces. Light fixtures with a hint of pink, walls accented with purple and furniture upholstered in cool blues and fuchsia.

The design of the reception desks was inspired by the clients curvilinear, ribbon like corporate logo. The concept of movement or digital like waves is found in the undulating reception desk with a hint of pink and in the luminous film used on glass fronts which also provides privacy. Wave-like patterns and textures reduce, expand and calm in areas where people come together. Colour is used to add playfulness but also serves as a directional guide that builds pathways to where collaboration areas are located. The open site lines and colour allows end users to quickly navigate through the space.

The general approach to the architecture is clean, timeless, neutral and open with glass enclosed collaboration rooms, accessible community areas wrapped with slatted wood feature details, and continuous site lines that allow visibility into all areas of the office space. Shared spaces are located on window space with plenty of wall space designated for collaborating and sharing ideas. The colour infuses energy, fun as well as communicates purpose. Purple defines more enclosed meeting area, deep pink a quiet focus zone and the warm honey rift cut maple is found in more formal, front facing areas. The overall feel is professional, open, bright, and modern with colour used to both enhance and communicate intent.

Client Statement

Our new downtown office at 199 Bay is a much more compact and efficient space than our previous office. We completely eliminated private offices and implemented an open floor concept. As a result, we are seeing so much more teamwork and collaboration at both workstation, multiuse collaboration areas. Specifically, the lunchroom is now a bright and open hub for all to enjoy, it is highly used. There is truly a great and comfortable flow when you walk through the office.
